Beginning Portrait Painting: 15-week class
This class teaches the fundamentals of painting the head in oil. Students will paint the model from life in 4 sessions (2 paintings total). Beginning with a toned canvas, students will execute a careful drawing and subsequently build up the structure of the head from darks to lights. Emphasis is on understanding the structure of the head and learning to mix colors to create realistic and harmonious flesh tones. The class will begin with a demonstration of the alla prima technique, used by John Singer Sargent and handed down through generations of atelier painters and teachers.
When: Monday afternoons 1-4 p.m.
Dates: Jan. 14 - May 17 (15 weeks) Closed Feb. 4-15 (Mardi Gras) Mar. 29-Apr. 4 (Easter)

Beginning Oil Painting: 15-week class This class introduces the student to oil painting. The student acquires a set of oil paints and brushes and learns to set up a palette and paint the still life. Students will create a still life composition and learn to render the composition in paint, using the techniques handed down from the artists of the Renaissance. Building upon the skills of drawing and composition, this class introduces color mixing and the process of building an oil painting from underpainting to finish.
Prerequisites: Beginning Drawing.
