We are pleased to present Sarah Thibodeaux's return to in-person learning in this two-day workshop.
This workshop teaches the fundamentals of painting the head in oil. Students will paint the model from life in four sessions. Beginning with a toned canvas, students will execute a careful drawing and subsequently build up the structure of the head from darks to lights. Emphasis is on understanding the structure of the head and learning to mix colors to create realistic and harmonious flesh tones. The class will begin with a demonstration of the alla prima technique, used by John Singer Sargent and handed down through generations of atelier painters and teachers.
We will meet from 9:00 to 4:00 PM for two full days to complete our portrait painting(s).
For materials lists, I have two: one for beginners and one for more experience painters The difference is the type of surface you use and the type of paint you buy. Essentially more cost-conscious for beginners. If you have more experience painting, try a higher end brand of paint and a smoother surface or more expensive linen suitable for commissioned portraits.
